1:1 Structured Literacy Tuition

At Dot to Dot Literacy we provide weekly 1:1 tuition for primary and intermediate aged children where there is a need to improve their reading, writing and spelling skills.

Benefits of 1:1 weekly tuition

Each week the lessons build upon prior knowledge by revisiting learning whilst also adding in a new rule and skill. Learners’ self-confidence is boosted as we celebrate each win along the way. It is important that we build a positive relationship with the learner to gain trust, as well as having a consistent predictable routine and timetable.

Each lesson is 1 hour, and follows the same routine each week so as to ensure that the learner is familiar with the expectations.

Parents are encouraged to sit in on each lesson alongside their child.

What is Structured Literacy?

Structured literacy refers to a specific method where literacy skills and strategies are taught using explicit, systematic, cumulative and supportive teaching.

There is no ‘guessing’ with structured literacy, and each concept is explained clearly. The explicit teaching approach ensures that concepts are taught using direct instruction.

Most schools teach children using a balanced literacy approach. This approach is not suitable for most children, particularly those with additional learning needs. However, a structured literacy approach is suitable for all children.

Explicit means

Concepts are taught using direct instruction, instructional tasks are modelled when appropriate.

Systematic means

The elements of language are taught sequentially with intensive practice and continual feedback to the learner.

Cumulative means

Lessons build on previous knowledge moving from simple concepts to more difficult.

Supportive teaching means

Learners' effort is encouraged so as self-confidence and motivation increases as children gain mastery of the content.

Multisensory means

Multisensory learning involves the use of visual, auditory and tactile pathways which are built into each lesson to enhance memory and learning of the written language.
